PILOT Pickup/Drop Off Zone Update @ Wed, Apr 18, 2012
by Bev Sharpe - Tuesday, 24 April 2012, 09:45 AM

RLC Parents/Guardians:

Just a quick update as to our new PILOT pickup/drop off zone located above the primary playground. The flow through signage is being installed today and the cement barriers currently blocking the area are being pulled tomorrow after 2:30pm. Therefore, this area will be ready for use Friday morning for drop off.

We encourage that this area only be used for pick up and drop off and not for parking. We ask that parents dropping and picking up students to please follow the signage as directed. We are very interested to see if this zone will ease our traffic congestion in this area.

If you have any feedback, please email Christine at chwatson@gmail.com so we can decide if this area is being effective.

We thank you so much for your patience and cooperation!

April 16th ~ Installation of a Pickup / Drop Off Zone on Highridge
by Bev Sharpe - Friday, 13 April 2012, 11:36 AM

April 13th, 2012

RLC Parents/Guardians:

As you already know, our Safe to School Travel Committee has been working very hard for over a year, to improve the safety around our school. We are expecting to see many changes take place this summer.

We have been informed that beginning Monday, April 16th, the installation of a pick up / drop off zone on Highridge above the primary playground will begin. We would like to stress that this is a PILOT program for our school. We will be speaking with our parents after the PILOT program to see if it has been successful and should stay at our school. We are hoping that this pick up / drop off zone might improve the flow of traffic. If it is deemed successful, this zone will become paved, and the school fence would be moved to allow more room, etc.

Because this project involves the school district, and the City of Kamloops we are told it may take a full week to be up and running. We expect this area to be chaotic for all of next week. When the City of Kamloops is able to install our signs, we will begin to use this area.

We ask that parents/guardians please allow some extra time in picking up and dropping off students for the next week or so.

Please understand we are trying our best, in cooperation with the City of Kamloops and the School District to make our issues around the school safer for all community members. If you have any questions, please email Christine at chwatson@gmail.com or Lace at laceymunden@shaw.ca

Regards,
Lacey Munden

Scent Considerate Facility
by Bev Sharpe - Wednesday, 23 February 2011, 11:06 AM

We're Scent Considerate in School District 73

Why the health concern about scents?
While fragrances may be pleasing to some people, they can be unpleasant and harmful to others.

Scents can cause serious health problems. People with allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) and asthma can become quite ill when exposed to scents.

Reactions can vary from mild to severe and can interfere with daily activities and being able to stay at school or work.

Reactions to scented products include:

  • headaches
  • difficulty concentrating
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • watery or dry eyes
  • sneezing & nasal congestion
  • rashes & hives
  • muscle & joint pain
  • swollen lymph glands
  • difficulty breathing
  • life threatening asthma attack
  • life threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
Natural scents (from flowers, animals) can cause health problems but most scents today come from chemicals. These chemical evaporate into the air and attach themselves to our hair, clothing and surroundings. They can trigger a reaction long after the user is gone.

Chemical fragrances are present in many things we use every day, including:
  • laundry products - detergents, fabric softeners, anti-cling products, bleach.
  • personal care products - soaps, body washes, deodorants, lotions and creams, makeup, perfumes, colognes and aftershaves, shaving cream, hair products (shampoo, conditioner, gel, hair spray), sunscreens.
  • school supplies - whiteboard markers, glue sticks, felts, crayons.
  • art and craft supplies - markers, paper, paint, candles
  • cleaning products and air fresheners.
  • flavoured food (gum and candy).
Often, users of scented products are unaware of how strong their scent is because they are unaffected by the chemicals. They may also be unaware that the chemicals in their scent can cause an allergic reaction for some people.

How can you and your family be scent considerate?

  • Be respectful of people with allergies. Ask yourself - do you or your children want to make someone sick?
  • Use scent-free products. Read ingredient labels when shopping. If fragrance, perfume or flavour is listed, the product is not fragrance free, even if labelled as unscented or scent free.
  • Avoid using perfume, cologne or other scented products when going into a scent considerate school or building.
  • Keep your workplace an home well ventilated.
  • Keep the air clean and safe for everyone.
What has School District 73 done about scent allergies?

Our School District strives to provide a healthy learning and working environment. Scent allergies are no different from other allergies, like peanuts or seafood.
  • Everyone who enters a scent considerate school or building is asked not to use or wear scented products.
  • Signage is posted outside and inside these buidlings.
  • Reminders are in school newsletters and on websites.
  • All school events are scent considerate.
  • SD73 uses many low odour, allergy aware maintenance products.
Scent considerate programs are in place in many businesses, government agencies and places of worship.
